Billington Family History Information

Many Billington families came to America from England. The name means "Estate of the Bill family" descendents most likely from the ancient Yorkshire and Lancashire areas as there are names of villages there (Bill's hillor homestead; of the ridge of the Billangas). It is possible that all Billingtons who came to America were connected to these early families. The first to arrive was John and Eleanor Billington of London who arrived on the Mayflower and settled in Plymouth.

Our direct line came from James Billington, born in England in 1723, arriving in New Jersey, settled in Newark and in 1740 married Anna America Garner on May 1, 1742. Because he was very literate and the neighborhood schoolmaster, he was often called upon to transcribe and witness various legal documents. He had three sons: James, Samuel and Ezekiel.
Our line continues through Ezekiel, born 3-22-1759, Newark, N.J.
